Special Curated Sessions
Plastic Pollution Inventories: Using and Scaling the Latest Plastic Pollution Assessment Models for Plastics Treaty implementation
Friday 4 October 15:00
- 16:30
This session will consider the applicability of different plastic pollution assessment tools and models for the purpose of implementing the Plastics Treaty. It focusses both on decision makers and on experts and consultants that may apply plastic assessment tools.
A global methodology for primary data collection on municipal waste management (MSW) systems is in place, the UN-Habitat Waste Wise Cities Tool, aligned with SDG indicator 11.6.1 on MSW.
Aligned closely with the WaCT, the GIZ WFD uses a combination of primary data and field observation to assess plastic waste material flows, points and quantities of leakage, and fates. The WFD tool is one of a number of data capture and modelling tools including the IUCN/UN Plastic Hotspotting, SPOT model, Plastic Pollution Calculator, and Plastics to Ocean Calculator that have been developed and applied to support the modelling of plastic pollution and inform evidence-based decision making.
