David Marquis is an environmental scientist specialised in plastic pollution, waste management, and marine litter. He has spent the last 6 years working for the RWA Group and for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on plastics pollution assessments and global plastics policy development, respectively. David has extensive experience in implementing waste management and marine litter surveys according to internationally recognised methods and has been the technical lead on two World Bank-funded projects on marine plastic pollution in Kenya (2020) and Lebanon (2021), during which he implemented a series of waste management and marine debris surveys. With UNEP, David has worked with a diversity of stakeholders, from government to civil society and the private sector, on matters related to national-level plastics policy in over 10 countries, including 5 in the African region and two Small Island Developing States. David has been involved in the UN’s Environment Assembly (UNEA) on several occasions, he has been involved in the intergovernmental negotiating committee to develop a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution (the INC), and he co-organized the 7th International Marine Debris Conference (7IMDC). David is familiar with the CSIRO, SST, and UNEP/IUCN methodologies for marine plastics monitoring, as well as the WaCT and WFD methodologies for waste surveys. He is fluent in English and French and is based in Nairobi, Kenya.
