Dave Newby is a partner in David Newby Associates (DNA), having established that company following a career in industrial hazardous waste management, chemical emergency response, hazardous installation decommissioning, and hazardous waste regulation and control.
Early training in mainframe and mini-computer programming led to him taking over the management of development of the Greater London Council’s waste management information system in 1985, when the system developers went into liquidation. This was one of the first such systems and featured electronic document and workflow management using computer-controlled microfilm reader-printers.
Since establishing DNA in 1987, Dave has worked in more than 30 countries globally. He has directly undertaken the development of a number of waste management information systems and environmental management information systems; and managed the development of many more. In recent years, with donor-funded systems, he has taken the approach of capacity building with local systems developers, directing their development of systems to his detailed design and development methodologies, thus ensuring future sustainability. More recently he was the developer of the UN-Habitat WaCT DCA and the data portal for the Wastewise Cities data, the GIZ Waste Flow Diagram data portal and the front end for the World Bank PLAST toolkit developed by Leeds University.
