Our PLASYS24 focus

The massive change needed to combat and end plastic pollution raises massive financing needs. Who will pay, which will be the mechanisms, which counties, organisations and structures will be enabled by this new / additional funding? Can EPR schemes be effectively applied in the Global South and what will be their remit? How taxes, credit schemes, deposit return schemes and other forms will be created, tested and adopted? Can overseas development assistance, which proved so far widely insufficient to improve the solid waste management services and infrastructure where is most needed, be scaled up and at pace? Will the informal waste workers be enabled by these provisions to recycle more with less harm to their health and communities? The list of open questions is long and the debate is heated. At PLASYS24 we explore the high-level situation around the INC negotiations which will shape the future of financing.
